Women’s Complex Needs Essex

Open Road work in partnership with Next Chapter (formerly Colchester & Tendring Women’s Refuge) to run a 9 bed ‘Recovery’ Refuge for women fleeing domestic abuse that have drug and alcohol addictions.

These women are some of the most vulnerable in our society and are often turned away from standard refuges due to the risk they pose to children who may also being staying in traditional refuge accommodation.

Open Road provide a Substance Misuse Specialist to work within the refuge, in collaboration with Essex STaRS and other partner agencies, to assist these women on their road to recovery.

Once the women have made significant progress, Next Chapter look to move them on to standard refuge accommodation and eventually step-down accommodation. This is a new and exciting project, and the only one of its kind in Essex.

In fact, there is only 1 other refuge in the country that offers the same support and treatment as our ‘Recovery’ Refuge.
