About the project

Working in partnership with the University of Essex, the three year ‘SWEAT’ project (Steroids, Weights, Education And Therapy) provides a specialist service for users of Image and Performance Enhancing Drugs who live in Essex. This will include a steroid-specific evening clinic, needle exchange, support and advice, education around safer injecting and partnership working with local gyms and pharmacies. 

About the role

you will receive full training to support the SWEAT team in delivering the project across Essex. 


At any one of our centres (Colchester, Basildon, Harlow, Chelmsford and Clacton). 

Key Responsibilities

  • Be part of the Open Road team.

  • Support the Outreach Workers in delivering steroid-specific evening clinics.

  • At the request of and under the supervision of the Project Manager, participate in any project-specific meetings (e.g., team meetings, steering group, and external agencies).

  • Support the Outreach Workers in facilitating group-based psychosocial interventions.

  • Be a focal point of expertise for the SWEAT team (e.g., training/guidance), which may involve delivering informal training sessions and/or workshops.

  • Provide 1:1 high intensity psychosocial interventions (Counsellors only).

  • Attend volunteer meetings and training.

  • Adhere to all guidelines, policies and procedures in place at Open Road.

  • Promote the equality, diversity, rights and responsibilities of all individuals. 

Training Provided

All Open Road Volunteers are asked to complete the following training: 

  • Induction

  • Health and Safety Essentials

  • Equality and Diversity

  • Information Governance

  • Safeguarding Adults

  • Safeguarding Children

  • Dual Diagnosis 

Volunteering for Open Road also gives you the opportunity to complete the following training: 

  • Dealing with Aggression (Conflict Management)  Recovery Training

  • Incident Reporting

  • Motivational Interviewing

  • Mental Health Awareness

  • NPS (Legal Highs) Awareness  Recovery Planning

  • Theseus

  • Domestic Violence Awareness 

Duration and Availability

We need you to be honest and tell us how much time you can commit to Open Road. Whilst the SWEAT project will primarily be offering a service in the evenings, additional duties may be required during the day. A minimum commitment of two hours per week is ideal.

As a volunteer, you will be giving your time to support the work of our Charity. During your time with us, you’ll get the chance to develop your skills, gain real-life work experience, make some great memories and gain some new friends. 

Placement Requirements

You must be over 18 years of age, provide two satisfactory references and complete an application for Enhanced DBS Disclosure (arranged by Open Road).
