On a beautiful May morning, supporters, friends and advocates of Open Road gathered at the renowned Beth Chatto Gardens in Essex

Our Flourishing Minds fundraising event brought together over 40 guests for an afternoon rooted in community, wellbeing and the restorative power of nature. We are pleased to share that the day raised over £1,400 for Open Road’s vital work supporting people on their journey to recovery, every penny of which will make a real and lasting difference. To everyone who attended, donated, bid on raffle prizes, shared the event, or simply showed up with an open heart; thank you. 🌿

A Garden Like No Other

Beth Chatto’s 7.5-acre garden in Essex is a place that has to be experienced to be believed. Founded on the celebrated “right plant, right place” principle, it is a living, breathing testament to what is possible when we work with nature rather than against it. From the famous gravel garden, thriving without irrigation, to the serene water garden with its drifting rowboat and cathedral-like canopy of trees, every step offered something to pause over and breathe in.

Our guests were treated to a personal guided tour led by the garden and landscaping team, who shared the stories behind the planting, Beth Chatto’s vision, and the principles that have made this garden a place of international pilgrimage. Many guests lingered long after the tour concluded, finding their own quiet corners for reflection and a moment of genuine peace.

Guests gathered beside the iconic water garden during the guided tour — a moment of stillness and wonder that captured everything the Flourishing Minds day set out to offer.

Gardening, the Mind and how a Community Grows

Garden owner Julia Bolton opened the afternoon with a warm and insightful talk on the profound connections between gardening, mindfulness, and mental well-being. Drawing on research and her own deep relationship with the land, Julia spoke movingly about how tending to living things, watching them struggle, adapt, and ultimately flourish, mirrors so much of our own inner lives.

Julia also spoke about the team at Beth Chatto, who have recently worked as an urban planning consultant with Essex developers building new homes adjacent to the gardens, a pioneering collaboration that is shaping how communities think about green spaces, wellbeing, and sustainable landscaping from the ground up. Charlotte Seamen Recovery Story

Above: Charlotte Seaman addressing Open Road supporters Charlotte’s candid and courageous talk, shining a light on the transformative impact of Open Road’s recovery support.

Charlotte’s Story: Courage, Honesty and Hope

A very moving personal account was given when Charlotte Seaman stood up to speak. With extraordinary courage, Charlotte shared her personal journey through addiction, the darkness of that struggle, and the light that came with the support she received through Open Road.

Charlotte spoke openly about how Open Road stood alongside her when she needed it most, and how that support was instrumental in her journey to becoming drug-free. Like everyone who embarks on a journey of recovery, she was brutally honest with herself and the audience and very aware of the impact her addiction had on everyone around her who cared.

We are enormously grateful to Charlotte for her generosity in sharing something so personal and so profoundly important. Stories like hers are at the heart of why Open Road exists and why fundraising events like Flourishing Minds matter so deeply. Follow Charlotte’s journey on Instagram →

Cream Teas, Raffle & Warm Connections

Between the talk and the tour, guests enjoyed a traditional cream tea with refreshments, a moment of warmth and conversation that felt entirely fitting for a day centred on connection and community. The raffle drew wonderful excitement, with prizes including three pairs of tickets to the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair at Audley End, and a coveted pair of weekend tickets to Wilderness Festival 2026. Congratulations to all our lucky winners!

What Your Support Makes Possible

Open Road exists to support people through some of the hardest chapters of their lives, offering guidance, community and compassionate professional care on the journey to recovery from addiction and mental health challenges. Every ticket purchased, every raffle entry, every donation made on the day goes directly towards continuing and expanding that work.

The £1,400 raised at Flourishing Minds is a testament to the generosity of this community, and a reminder of what we can achieve when we come together around a shared belief that recovery is possible, that nature heals, and that no one should face their struggles alone.

Thank you, from all of us at Open Road

To our guests, our speakers, the team at Beth Chatto and everyone who donated – thank you, we are so grateful.

A blooming big thank you to all those who organised, attended and supported us on this annual event, we hope you enjoyed the talks and tours – see you next year.

Nature doesn’t hurry, yet everything is accomplished. There is so much that gardening can teach us about recovery — about patience, about tending to what needs tending, and trusting that growth is happening even when we cannot yet see it.  Julia Bolton
