Appropriate Adult Insight Mike

Mike Hector – Appropriate Adult Volunteer

I have been an Appropriate Adult for six years and still continue to enjoy it.

The reason I chose to do the role originally was because I wanted to learn more about young people in crisis to help me in my full time day job. The role has grown to involve adults with learning difficulties and/or mental health problems and that covers a huge selection of people.

By nature, I am very open-minded, but this has shown me a lot of the situations and issues that affect all of us. I have also learnt a great deal more about the police, who I now view with an even greater respect and understanding.

Although there are only a limited number of offences, I have never worked with two call outs that were the same so there’s always something to learn.

Most importantly, I am confident that I have made life a little easier for a lot of people who are going through a very stressful time, irrespective of guilt. The only negative is that you realise most TV dramas are absolutely nothing like real life!
