From Volunteer to Worker
After being a volunteer project worker at Open Road in Colchester for eight months, I am now working as a Floating Support Worker.
Open Road has provided a great learning curve for me; as a volunteer I was able to undergo training which has proved vital to working in the organisation and the opportunity to understand the client group and their needs a bit more.
Now as a worker, the learning experience is ongoing and naturally, the biggest change is the level of responsibility that comes with any role. I have welcomed this change which has developed my insight into the inner conflicts that lead different people into substance mis-use.
Being a volunteer was an important stepping stone into my desired career and despite the pressures that we face from time to time, it remains a privilege to be a part of such a hardworking and dedicated team. |
