Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese holistic therapy developed over the last 4000 years. It supports the body’s own healing process by stimulating the energy channels known as meridians. These are the same channels that are used in Acupuncture, but rather than needles, the therapist uses his or her hands, thumbs, elbows and sometimes even knees and feet to manipulate the energy.
Shiatsu is a safe, effective and powerful method of restoring and maintaining health.
It helps to balance the vital energy flow, influencing functions of the internal organs, releasing tensions in the musculo-skeletal system and stabilising emotional and psychological conditions.
The treatment usually takes place on a cushioned surface on the floor. A number of techniques are used including pressure to the meridians and points, rocking, stretching and manipulation of the limbs to release deeply held tensions and encourage the free flow of energy. Clothing is worn throughout the session and this should be loose and comfortable.
Shiatsu is a holistic therapy that affects the body on physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual levels. For this reason it is helpful in the treatment of drug and alcohol misuse.
It is particularly helpful for:
- Back, neck, shoulders and joints pain, stiffness and tension.
- Sciatica
- Anxiety and depression
- Insomnia
- Low self-esteem
- Stress relief
It is a deeply relaxing and ultimately invigorating experience.

- It is best to have a light meal at least one hour before treatment.
